You may never have any reason to venture down into this gully, or know of its existence, unless you are a rock climber. It is one of the main access points to reach the bottom of the cliffs of the crag known at Chair Ladder, near Gwennap Head, a few miles south of Land’s End. The gully gets its name from the coastguard lookout just above. This gully is where the watchmen would throw their ashes from their fire. The wide cracks on the left side of gully provide excellent pitches of rock climbing in their own right. Even if they are the reserve of a particular niche style of climbing, known as ‘off-width’ climbing. Basically squeezing up wrong-size cracks by whatever body part you can make stick inside the crack. But I digress…
