Here is my gallery of insect macrophotography. A macro lens reveals worlds we would never have seen, even if they are right under our nose. I specialise in insect (and other invertebrate) macro photography. The form and behaviour of these tiny animals never ceases to amaze, and detail we can’t see with the human eye can be revealed in striking detail.
It was close-up photos of damselflies that sparked my interest in macro photography, and odonates (damselflies and dragonflies) remain my favourite subjects. Fieldcraft is a key component of insect macro photography. The behaviour of each target species must be understood in order to find them and photograph them. As with all natural history photography, patience is key. The work shown here is the culmination of many hours in the field. Many painfully early starts were required to find these subjects when they are less active.
All of these photos feature live specimens captured in their natural habitat in the field. Cruelty-free macro photography.
